Rodarte + Ballet = Black Swan

Natalie Portman for Black Swan

Today, August 19, 2010, I can say with absolute certainty it has begun. The air has officially started to thicken with excitement for the the 11 days of over 300 films that is the  Toronto International Film Festival. Conversations can be heard all over the city about the films, the parties and of course the celebrities that will descend on Toronto in and around September 9 to 19, 2010.

The film schedules will not be released until next Tuesday, September 24, but certain films already have more than just a little buzz around them. Black Swan directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream) and starring Natalie Portman is one of those such films. Aronofsky and Portman’s names aren’t the only reason this particular film has people chomping at the bit to get their hands on tickets, this film is just about any and every fashion lover’s dream.

The costuming was left in the more than capable hands of sisters Laura and Kate Mulleav of Rodarte, who designed 40 costumes and outfitted the entire ballet corps for Black Swan–which is also their first foray into film.

Black Swan tells the story of Nina (Portman) a prima ballerina who is technically exceptional,  but has trouble tapping into her sensuality. She is cast  as the lead in Swan Lake in the New York City ballet where her manipulative dance master (Vincent Cassel) pressures her to become a seductress on stage.

Things take a complicated twist for Nina with the arrival of Lily (Mila Kunis) at the ballet, who is a natural seductress and everything Nina is not on stage.  Black Swan is a dark film with psychological twists and turns aka perfect for Rodarte.

The absolutely gorgeous and gothic inspired ballerina wardrobe is nothing short of breathtaking, as we would expect to see from the talented Mulleav sisters. This is why so many love Rodarte. The clothing is creative, sinister and intrinsically beautiful.

Tommy Ton comes to Holt Renfrew & Toronto pulls out their best shoes

Tommy Ton of JakandJil.com

Toomy Ton, the man behind the insanely popular fashion and shoe blog JakandJil popped into his home town of Toronto for a fun little event at Holt Renfrew, which is Canada’s answer to Saks.

Holt’s gathered the city’s fashion glitterati and presented a collection of Tommy Ton’s much heralded shoe shots as well as the Fall 2010 designer collections. The result was a crowd of impeccably dressed folks with stunning shoes to match. Tommy Ton was also there shooting the shoes of those who came out, so the stakes were high on August 18, 2008 at 50 Bloor Street West.

Mr. Alexander Wang Himself

Alexander Wang is only 24-years-old but his designs are loved by women far and wide, and for very good reason. He is incredibly talented, creative, has an eye for detail and uses the best fabrics he can get his hands on. He is also insanely cute, so cute you just want to shove him in your pocket and pull him out when you are having a bad day, just to see that cheery smile.

Yesterday, July 21,2010, fashion fans poured into Holt Renfrew‘s second floor for a chance to meet and take a photo with the designer extraordinaire and of course peep his Fall 2010 line.

Wang never disappoints with his wears, the leather in particular made more than one person swoon with glee.

As expected people were dressed to impress, some more successful than others. Lindsay Coome is a student at UWO and looked cute as a button in her Opening Ceremony dress, Prism glasses and Alexander Wang mules.

Fashion photographers and sisters Lily and Lilac also looked incredible with their effortless style.

But ladies I have to say no one, and I mean no could even touch Holt Renfrew’s Marni rep Gloria Sharp’s style, it simply oozed out of her. Take note everyone, this woman has the illusive ‘it’ factor. Here she is in vintage Issey Miyake and a little touch of Alexander Wang.

Alexander Wang is Coming to Toronto TOMORROW July 21, 2010

It’s true. Designer Alexander Wang will be at  Holt Renfrew‘s flagship Bloor Store, tomorrow July 21, 2010 between 12:oo and 1:30 pm. We have been waiting for weeks for this day to come and it’s just about here. Wang has become the go-to-designer for stylish girls everywhere, so it comes as no surprise that this event has been on the  top of many fashion bloggers and fashion fans anywhere within the Toronto radius.

Wang is a young designer in terms of age, he is only 24-years-old and experience, he has only been in the game since 2004, but as we know both mean nothing. The man is talented and is tenderly known as “The T-shirt Master”. Wang knows fabrics, tailoring and how to make a woman’s body look G.O.OD. So it really is no surprise how much we ladies love him. But his skill goes far beyond the apparel, his accessories and shoes are also hugely coveted items.

Alexander Wang is an city girl’s demi-God and here are a few reasons why…
